The HKSAR Government devised the Northern Metropolis Development Strategy in the 2021 Policy Address, and the Sha Tau Kok Frontier Closed Area will be gradually opened in June 2022. The Security Bureau and relevant departments have formulated a six-month pilot plan that, during the three months of the first phase, allows designated group tours to go sight-seeing there and take a ferry at the Pier to visit neighbouring places including Lai Chi Wo and Kat O on designated dates. Its aim is to let the members of the public have a deep understanding of its history and culture, natural scenery and tourist attractions.

In view of the positive response from the trade and the public to the Sha Tau Kok Frontier Closed Area Local Tour, the TIC and Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department will organise an online training course for holders of the Tourist Guide Pass and the Tour Escort Pass about the relevant information in order to enhance of the standards of the trade’s professional services.

Holders of the Tourist Guide Pass and the Tour Escort Pass appointed by tour operators that operate the Sha Tau Kok Frontier Closed Area Local Tour must participate in this training course before they can lead the tour(s). Details are as follows:

Contents of the course:

1. The Northern Metropolis Development outline and Sha Tau Kok;

2. an overview of the history and culture of Sha Tau Kok;

3. points to note for the activities in the Sha Tau Kok Frontier Closed Area;

4. an overview of the Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region of the Hong Kong Geopark;

5. the main geological sites and landscape, ecological resources as well as the history, culture and stories of the Ap Chau, Kat O, Lai Chi Wo and Double Haven.
