TIC deeply concerned about Hong Kong’s shops named and shamed by CNTA
Two shops in Hong Kong were named and shamed a few days ago by the Quality Supervision Office of the Industry Management Department, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), in a report which summarised tourist complaints in mainland China in 2006 (Chinese version only) and which was posted on its website.
The Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong (TIC) is greatly concerned about the matter and has taken immediate follow-up action. The TIC’s Committee on Shopping-related Practices specially met today (2 February) to discuss the matter, during which the use of misleading or deceitful tactics by registered shops was strongly condemned. The TIC would like to remind its member agents to be cautious about itinerary arrangements so that visitors will only be taken to reputable shops in order that the reputation of Hong Kong as a shoppers’ paradise can be upheld. The TIC will continue to enhance regulation over its member agents and registered shops and will review the existing mechanisms to prevent any attempt by traders to shirk their responsibility.
The TIC will work closely with the CNTA to promote the “Honest & Quality Hong Kong Tours” programme and ensure better cooperation between the two bodies.
